THE MULTISENSORY IMMERSIVE ROOM
THE IMMERSIVE ROOM TO SUPPORT SOCIAL FUNCTIONING
The immersive room enables people to “experience” – in advance – inherently stressful situations, thus helping users better cope when they find themselves in challenging circumstances. More specifically, the room could help users deal with unease and phobias, providing a safe approach to situations which might generate fear or anxiety.
THE MULTISENSORY IMMERSIVE ROOM FOR THE ELDERLY
The immersive room is a place to relax and / or take advantage of multisensory stimulations that can have a positive effect on well-being.
Multisensory stimulations favour orientation in space and time (i.e. they help people recognise the here and now), increase self-esteem and improve the perception of the bodily Self (i.e. the mental image that everyone has in mind regarding his/her body and related experiences), thus encouraging serenity and well-being in general.”

Lights, colours, sounds, aromas, music, tactile surfaces and shapes, both static and moving, make for a controlled environment where calming and encouraging stimuli are well balanced and easy for people to react to, thus helping to improve different behaviours (from apathy to carelessness, opposition, aggression, moodiness, and relationship problems with the caregiver).
The virtual multisensory room is accessible, familiar, and reassuring. It is an environment created and organised according to the needs of the users, conceived to give elderly dementia sufferers back an active role as “custodians of resources”. The room is conceived and designed to provide the widest state of comfort and well-being.
If it is to be used as therapeutic rehabilitation in nursing homes or in centres for cognitive disorders and dementia, the protocol must be studied by experts and validated with a pilot or experimental project.
NEUTRAL PLACES TO RECOVER CALMNESS AND WELL-BEING
- The virtual multisensory rooms are neutral spaces, capable of promoting psycho-physical well-being in a variety of contexts, through physical and emotional detachment from tiring and / or stressful situations and the controlled stimulation of all the senses.
These rooms are ideal for installation in:
• Shopping malls crowded with people, where background noise is constant and the decibel level is always high, and where thousands of lights, intermittent and coloured, provide a build-up of visual stimuli;
• Airports, i.e., places where tension can mount, especially for those who are uncomfortable flying; and
• Amusement parks, i.e., places of entertainment and adrenaline-pumping emotions where boredom is never at home, but which are stressful for some people.
